This
part of Achill ISIS 2005 started in fall 2004. A course in Remagen
developed first technical and conceptual concepts for the Achill
Virtual Community. Through online communication the German students
worked together with the other four nations on the provisional
community. A lot was to come and the workshop on Achill changed
different parts of the community website to make it more attractive
and bring it to life.
The
basic idea behind the community concept was the topic for the
course that took place throughout the winter semester in Remagen.

RheinAhrCampus,
Remagen, founds a virtual consulting company that specialises
in “Emigrant Virtual Communities”. The company will
start by doing research about such communities:
• how do these communities work?
• what kinds of communities are there?
• what does a business plan of such a community look like?
• what makes the participants contribute?
• what services are offered to the emigrants?
The task will be to design a virtual community for the Achill
emigrants who have emigrated mostly to the USA but also to other
countries. The company will try to customize a virtual community
to the needs of emigrants from Achill Island:
• where can we find clusters of emigrants from Achill?
• how are they trying to keep in touch with Achill?
• what are the reasons for keeping in touch?
• what kind of virtual community would satisfy their needs?
• what kind of customized business plan is needed?
The company has branches in Sweden, France, Spain, and Belgium
which will be helpful in the market research and will collect
data from these different countries (in the national languages).
They will compare in how far the nationality has an influence
on the running of the virtual communities and how such a community
could be customized for Achill emigrants.
In February 2005 the company plans a field trip to Achill Island
with some of their employees in order
• to attract potential participants to the community
• to organise seminars on genealogy and cultural identity
• to create an event that draws attention to the virtuall
community
Workshop
description
The
goal of the Achill Virtual
Community Workshop (leaded by Thomas Berger) is to implement
the Achill Virtual Community on Achill.
Thanks to Karsten and the great work of VC4U we have found a partner
on the Island. We will meet with people from the IT-Center on Achill
and will discuss possibilities of using the Achill Community e.g.
in the framework of courses offered there. According to their needs
we might have to modify and enhance the community and its contents.
On Friday we have the chance to present our results to a regular
course of the IT-Center (our potential users). Further opportunities
are currently explored by Karsten and will be presented at the beginning
of the course.
We are looking for an international team and for key people of VC4U.
