Europe meets Gaelic

Workshop description
FÀILTE

to our Gaelic Culture and Language Workshop

During our stay on Achill Island, we will be able to discover the Irish way of life on the spot…

And with this workshop, we aim to discover it from its roots!

Did you know that English was not the original language of the island?

Much of the Irish culture and identity lies on the evidence of the Irish language spoken on the island many years ago.

This workshop contains interesting stuff about:
? The Irish language, its origins and how it settled in the island
? Why the Irish language is no longer spoken as the official language
? The presence of this Gaelic language in present-day Irish life

The Irish language is linked with the Gaelic culture, which is also still alive thanks to traditional dances, music, old-sayings and proverbs. There is the

We will learn to dance traditional dances so maybe we can have a very Irish farewell party!

Part of the Irish culture is also traditional sports such as hurling, camogie, gaelic football, etc. These sports are original of Ireland, of its real ‘identity’ and as such there’s room for them within this workshop.

The workshop will travel from the past to the present.

We will see how all the old Gaelic traditions and beliefs play a part in the Irish identity today.

And we will also discover some of the most remarkable celebrities from the island: Saints, writers, revolutionary politicians, and other people whose name is synonym of Ireland today.
