Grandma online - Silver Surfer

Workshop description

Grandma online

VC4U has designed a virtual community for the community on Achill to bring emigrants and those at home together.
IN THIS CREATIVE WORKSHOP the retired and the elderly on Achill Island will have the opportunity to become involved in our project in a way which is meaningful to them. Many older people have FANTASTIC STORIES to tell about their lives, about living conditions in the last century, about poverty and EMIGRATION. They have photos, postcards, old newspaper cuttings and all types of souvenirs to share.
You can help them to organise, present and even Publish Their Story. And by bringing together New Technologies with "oral history", pictures and documents from the past, you help awaken their curiosity about what new media can offer them.
With your help they will be able to make some really attractive contributions to the virtual community VC4U has designed for them. With their help and the help of new media, we will create a MULTIMEDIA BIOGRAPHY-PRESENTATION.
Thanks to Karsten, our man on the spot, important contact has already been made with some interested parties on Achill.
Andrea and Vera will lead the workshop and invite anyone interested who likes listening to old people.
Looking forward to hearing any ideas you might have,
Andrea Pohlmann-Jochheim (andrea.pohlmann-jochheim@stadt-koeln.de)
Vera Colwell (dfmvc@unileon.es)

"Silver Surfer" = Elderly people using the internet

This workshop will investigate about elderly people and the internet. We will talk about the generations or our parents and grandparents and how they take advantage of the internet.

We want to find ways for inspiring elderly people to use the web. I believe it offers many chances:
• Stay in contact with the family
• Keep up-to-date with the professional interests
• Stay active after retiring (slower ageing process)
At the final stage we will collaborate with the "Grandma goes online" workshop, visiting the daycare center in Achill for contacting people who are interested in learning, which benefits the internet can offer.

Who am I?

I am Alex from Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain the leader of this workshop. As i am the owner of an Internet Café in a tourist area which is frequented by mostly "old" tourists I have direct experiences with this topic. Hope to see you soon!
