Travel to Ireland

Flying from Belgium to Dublin

All packed and ready to go. Hearts are beating faster and faster from excitement and curiosity as we drag our baggage towards the airport’s luggage check-in area…. Pilot’s call - all seatbelts are fastened and ready for take-off. Flight 043 slowly ascended… destination: DUBLIN.

Dublin (20 minutes before the expected arrival time), this small, Belgian group of 3 took a typical Irish double-decker bus which drove us to the centre of the city. Later on, we walked through the smooth and cobble-stoned city streets towards the hostel. The journey has not yet finished. It has actually just started and it looks so promising.

At this moment the curiosity and excitement still floats in the air meeting up other participants who we had only seen in pictures posted online. Very interesting because this special feeling like having butterflies in your stomach continues day by day as we do not really know what’s going to happen and what should be done the next day. It’s a learning adventure!

From Remagen to Dublin

Finally the day of departure has come. Some of our students started their trip from Remagen and joined the other part of the German group at the Airport in Cologne.
Everyone was excited to come to Ireland, especially those who have already been here. And because we travelled on the crazy day called “Schwerdonnerstag” we met a lot of people dressed up in fancy clothes, even in the early hours of the morning whilst travelling on the train. Everything was well arranged by Mathias Göring our intern German travel manager. He lead us through the airport in Cologne and Dublin and organized a nice taxi trip to our hostel, the Kinlay House. During our taxi trip we got a first wonderful impression of Dublin and the old buildings and castles.

Sweden -->Germany --> Ireland

I started my journey in Umea on Thursday evening the 27th of January. I had to travel with many means of transportation (train, bus and airplane), so I arrived in Germany on Saturday morning and was by then ready to meet my German colleagues in Remagen. I was very excited to see them since we had been in contact with each other through Email for quite some time. During the week in Germany we settled the last couple of things that we needed for our work in Achill. Today the 3rd of February, we finally left for Ireland and Achill Island, where we will spend the next 10 days, working together in international and intercultural teams, attending to work shops and learning more about the Irish culture. I am very much looking forward to this excursion!

Travel from Umea, Sweden to Dublin, Ireland.

Our trip to Ireland started in Umea at 07.25. Our first flight went from Umea to Stockholm. We arrived at Arlanda Airport around 08.30, everybody were still very sleepy, actually not even awake yet.

After checking out the crew asked Bjorn “Ok, and where is your Dublin ticket, then?” Bjorn went pretty nervous, he checked his bunch of tickets again and he realized his mistake. He had not seen the ticket and everything went back to normal again. We went into the plain, Maria (Majsan among the Swedes and soon among the rest) changed her seat with another passenger so that she could sit with the rest of us. After a small talk, everyone fell asleep again. After a three and a half hour-long flight we finally arrived at Dublin airport, got all our luggage and went out to find the cheapest bus to take us to the city of Dublin. We managed to find a ticket for 1.70 and it was fun to take the slowest bus so that we could see some of Dublin.

Trip León – Dublin

Eva, Fernando, and Jesús agreed to meet at the bus station at 11.15, just a few minutes before the bus left. Jesús warned us that he might be late, and he actually meant it. Minutes after 11.30, after convincing our coach driver to wait a wee more for our colleague, we saw him coming into the bus station, quietly.
After we arrived in Madrid we got to Barajas International Airport where we met Ana Belén.
Going through the security control was just an adventure. Fernando's leg beeping, Jesús “little” Swiss Army knife beeping as well... We finally met Vera next to the boarding gate where we talked about flags, symbols, and their meaning.
The flight was just the easy part, a relaxing experience with a harsh welcome: the Irish rain. We took a taxi and went to the hostel.
The day ended up with a marvelous Guinness pint, the warm welcome from our mates, jokes, fun, and the severe necessity to sleep a whole day long.

Arrival of German Group from Fulda

Our train journey to the airport was already an experience.
In the train we were surrounded by “cowboys and –girls”, clowns and other strange characters. I do not report about dreams – this is reality if you travel in Germany in the time of carneval. I left my usual business attire in the suitcase, for good reasons.

Every man risks to get his tie cut by “crazy woman” today. We have “Weiberfastnacht”, a day of carneval, when woman symbolically overrrule men, a carneval tradition which has its roots in the women's movement of the last century. In comparison with our train journey the flight was much less spectacular and we have arrived safe and sound in Dublin.
