Getting Involved!

“Stepping Out of the Lift”

In today’s lunchtime lecture Ann Fox started off by presenting pictures from Denmark. These pictures represented her impressions of the Danish people and culture. Then we were divided into two groups, one was supposed to think about pictures which represent their country and culture and an interviewer group. What we didn’t know was that the interviewer group would confront us with different behaviour, which somehow created uncomfortable situations.

It "quite expectedly" turned out that people feel uncomfortable if getting too close and touchy. People get confused when the person opposite them can’t stand still while talking and others don’t even care about the form of interaction at all. This is a result of different cultural norms which every one of us has adopted, norms that are always there when we interact with other people and which we experienced during this lecture. Just like stepping in or out of a lift.

Borrowed Identities - Family Visit

Our workshop began early in the morning. Laurence was preparing a nice breakfast for us while we were collecting first ideas for our meeting with Mary.
Theo and Antje, our workshop leaders, gave us some basic information from where the rest of the group could (Matthias, Frederick, Ingrida, Michael and Jesus, Laurent and Dorothy) start to build up the final idea.
There was a brainstorming where each one considered either a concrete detail or the whole picture, and idea by idea, piece by piece the whole thing started to take some shape.
It was not easy. We wanted to get cultural information about Achill from Mary, our lovely neighbour, without intimidating her because of the presence of such a big group and our cameras.

Right after we had arrived at her house we showed her the official Achill 2004 movie while having a cup of tea. This was a nice warm-up. Afterwards we explained to her what was going to happen. Then we began the role-play. Mary’s new children Megan (Ingrida from Lithuania) and Patrick (Jesus from Spain), came back from school. They all had a short conversation with their mother.

Among other things, Patrick told his mother about his problems at school. And suddenly their three friends from abroad (Matthias, Frederick, and Michael) arrived. They told Mary about their plan to travel around the island. Finally, the kid's thirst for Guinness took them to the pub.
After we had successfully completed the video taping, we had another cup of tea and an interesting conversation with Mary, just until Karsten arrived and took all of us back to the cottages.

Karaoke Night at the Achill Head Hotel

Dinner was over, no way back! A great night out dancing and singing karaoke was waiting for us at the Achill Head Hotel. People were nervous and excited, some scared, but we all felt like having fun and enjoying all together each other´s company. The night turned out good fun, thanks a lot to the Irish people in the pub, who were most hospitable and friendly as usual. As a warming up we could test our knowledge about Achill and Ireland, common fields of interest connected to the different European countries and last but not least popular pieces of music, in competing in an intercultural quiz. But then it was time to get up to move and groove.

We sang and danced to the music from the various countries (Viva Colonia, la Macarena, Dancing Queen...), and especially from Ireland. There were very good Irish dancers and singers so we could really enjoy the traditional Irish culture. As the Irish say: "It was good craic!"

Creation and Theology in Castlebar

On Monday 7th some students were invited by Sheila McHugh, a theologian who lives on the island, to attend her lecture on Creation and Theology at Castlebar College.

There were 12 students in their 20s to 50s, most of whom attend these lectures in the evening, because they either work or have to attend a family in the morning. The majority of these students have been attending college for two years and are doing a program in religious studies and humanities. In fact, after Sheila´s lecture they had a course on Psychology.

The lecture was really interesting, partly due to the combination of spiritual, moral explanations with scientific descriptions about the origin of the world. But most importantly, we could discuss along with the Irish students. They are active, give their opinions and ask questions. This made it all very dynamic and enjoyable.

We thank Sheila for her lecture and invitation to think about why we are here and what we are doing. On Achill we have come to learn about the Achill community and other cultures and we are enjoying the rough charm of this beautiful island.
